What is Matter?

Matter is everything around you. You are surrounded by matter! Everything you can see, and sometimes what you can’t see is matter. Matter is around you EVERYWHERE! MATTER is defined as anything that takes up space (has volume), and has mass (or weight).

Volume

Volume is the amount of space an object occupies. The volume of an object can be calculated using mathematical equations. The volume of a cube can be found using the formula V=(side)x(side)x(side)

Mass

Mass is how much there is of an object. Mass is related to how much something weighs. Mass and weight are two different things. The unit for mass is a gram. A nickel has the mass of about one gram. We often use a triple-balance beam to measure mass.
